Raised Patio and Fire Pit, Freeport, Maine

DSCN0809 Construction of this project began with a four foot high retaining wall to level off the grade for the patio and fire pit. Once the wall was up, roughly 40 yards of gravel were brought in and compacted to lay the patio.

In-progress pictures of the retaining wall show the long “though-bands” or tie stones placed every three feet to unite both sides of the wall and create a single structural unit. Large corner stones tie back into the wall to make a return for the steps, and large single cap stones finish off the top. The fire pit was built on a concrete slab and lined with fire-brick to protect the stone from heat. Care was taken to get the joints extremely tight.
